How to Convert MP3's to CD
MP3 audio has been compressed to about one-tenth of the original "wav" file from whence it came. In order for the MP3 songs you have downloaded from the Internet to be recorded onto an Audio Compatible CD, (that is to say - a CD that can be played in most any cd player like the one in your car), the MP3 files must be un-compressed and converted into 16Bit 44.1kHz WAV files. A software MP3-to-WAV conversion utility is called a "decoder".

The CD recording software that comes included with new cd burners may or may not have a "MP3-to-Wav Decoder" in its toolbox.

One exception is Nero 5.5 Burning ROM software from Ahead Software. Nero can decode mp3's to wav on-the-fly in real time, eliminating the extra step, a nice time-saver and space saver!

Another terrific new software is Dart CD Recorder 4.1

How To Decode MP3's with Winamp
Here are Six Easy Steps for converting your Mp3's to Wav's using Winamp:
  1. Press the Eject button on Winamp’s main window to display the 'Open File' window, find an MP3 file you want to convert, and press the "Open" button
  2. Click the upper-left hand icon in Winamp to open the main menu. Choose the Options Submenu and Select 'Preferences'
  3. Highlight 'Output' under 'Plug-ins' in the left window tree. Make a mental note of the current selected output plug-in on the right, and then change it to ‘Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in v1.x (x86)’ instead.
  4. Click Configure which prompts you to Select a Directory you want the resulting wav file(s) to be saved in. Press OK then Close Preferences.
  5. Press Play to do the conversion to WAV file(s).
  6. When you’re done converting files be sure to go back into 'Options > Preferences' and re-select the Output plug-in that was set before, either ‘Nullsoft waveOut plug-in v2.xx (x86)’ or ‘Nullsoft DirectSound plug-in v0.xx’.
Winamp automatically names the new file assigning a track number at the beginning of the new file name, a nice feature for creating your playlist.
Have fun!
